I’ve been remiss on writing to you, and for that, I apologize.

I’ve been quite honest about my usual disdain for summer, and while I don’t feel relief that it’s over this year, I’m still very ready for fall. And, in honor of school beginning (though I no longer have any tie to a school semester or a semester of any kind), let’s start off the year with a light lesson.

Lessons I Learned this Summer:

• If a tomato is qualifying as “pink” and not “red,” don’t buy it.

• The ocean is salty and my eyes will burn (are you guys doing something differently than me?).

• It doesn’t matter how other people are spending their summer.

• You can still get freckles with SPF on (this is a positive thing).

• Burrata isn’t really that good.

• Having coffee on the stoop will always change the day for the better.

• A bike ride often feels better than a walk in the heat (built in breeze).

• The electricity bill will be high anyway, you can turn the A/C down 1 degree.

• Almost nothing can beat a Michigan summer weekend.

• A salad is mostly better in theory than in reality.

We’ll end class there today.

things I’ve been enjoying

I was able to see a screening of The Substance last week and I’M STILL THINKING ABOUT IT. It was grotesque and horrifying, yet was the most profound movie I’ve seen in a long time.

My old neighborhood hosts an annual “art walk” where people exhibit their art inside these gorgeous, old homes. I visited a house that had ~100 paintings laid around the porch. My group got to talking to the owner, and it turns out all of the art was created by his grandfather, who is now 99 and lives overseas. It’s been his grandfather’s life-long dream to have his work exhibited and his grandson is making that happen for him. It took the him 7 years to bring the whole collection over to the US.
